Elizabeth Kenneday
Through the photographic medium, my curiosity about the ways in which land is simultaneously utilized, occupied, bulldozed, cherished, and protected are explored and interpreted Moving to the eastern Sierra Nevada after maintaining an academic life in southern California for twenty years has made me acutely aware of the land use issues, past and present, constantly in play in the area. A microcosm of the American West saga, from early Native American occupation through 19th century Exploration Era pursuits, Gold Rush enterprises, agricultural and railway endeavors, 20th century’s pop culture activities of movie sets, earthworks, and more, as well as the ever-popular tourist/recreational activities, the region has been subject to major ecological stresses and political battles. The 21st century bears the imprint of all these activities -some visible, and some not. |
