My subjects
are of the natural world, of human nature and the built environment within
nature. A recent public sculpture evolved from my role as artist member
of the Design Team of WWB Architects for the new Mission Valley Library
in San Diego. The theme was The River, honoring a precious natural
resource, which even within viewing distance, was hidden by foliage from
sight. The Sycamore Leaf Canopy, awarded a San Diego AIA 2002
Design Award, is composed of eight structural columns, each with arching,
cut steel panes. It had light projected leaf shadows cast upon the barrel
roof to bring the outdoors in.
