Statement:
As artists from the developed world, we look around us and take measure of the cost of this development - for our water, our earth, our food supply, our air, our bodies, and our social relationships. The pollution wrought by industrialization has brought us to the precipice of a global environmental catastrophe. While all of us are at risk, Third World people, the poor, and people of color in the US live in the areas of greatest toxic exposure, suffering the most direct harm.

The landscape has traditionally been a means for artists to celebrate the grandeur and the sublime beauty of our earth. In this age, the landscape is rapidly becoming a means for preserving a record of what could be irretrievably lost to us - just as John James Audubon's prints were destined to serve as a chronicle of now-extinct species.

We seek to create an exhibition that begins with the landscape - the damaged and the pristine - but that also moves substantially beyond this form to address the issues of urban environmental racism, environmental justice, and environmental activism. The Puffin Foundation and IFCO/Pastors for Peace are issuing an open call to artists to submit work for this historic exchange with the Cuban people.
